Photo Apparel Questions
  1. What is the preferred image quality or resolution for uploaded images?
  2. What does "dpi" mean?
  3. How big of an image can I upload?

What is the preferred image quality or resolution for uploaded images?
What looks good on your screen will not necessarily look good printed.

As a general rule, there are four main factors that determine image quality:
1.    The quality of the recording device (camera's sensor, scanner).
2.    The size (in pixels) of the digital image.
3.    The format the digital image is stored in (JPG, BMP, TIFF, PNG, etc.).
4.    The "eye" of the artist

Here are some guidelines to help you select the best possible image file:

Your actual results will vary based on the pixel size of your picture, file format choice and options, and any zooming performed on the image. The more pixels your picture has, the higher quality of print that can be produced from it. The file format you choose to save your picture as determines whether or not some of your image is 'lost' when saving it.

Below is a list of the types of Photo Apparel, the size your image or design will appear on each, and the image file resolution recommended. You may use a larger or smaller image than reccomended, but smaller images may result in a poor quality print.

Photo T-Shirts: Your photo or design, plus the template, will be printed up to 8" tall and 10" across. For a good, clear image, we reccomend the file be 2400 x 1920 or larger.

Photo Sweatshirts: Your photo or design, plus the template, will be printed up to 8" tall and 10" across. For a good, clear image, we reccomend the file be 2400 x 1920 or larger.

How big of an image can I upload?
In order to be able to efficiently produce your order, we store enough image data to print a 24" x 36" image at 300 dpi. If you have anything larger than this size, please reduce the resolution to 150ppi. This will reduce the physical file size so that you can easily upload to the design wizard. A 24" x 36" image at 300ppi is equal to 7200 pixels X 10800 pixels image. This is a very good image for canvas prints, aluminum photo panels, and other large products.

What does "dpi" mean?
DPI is an abbreviation for Dots Per Inch. This term comes from the paper printing world that refers to the number of physical dots of ink in a paper printed document in a square inch area. Since we use digital technology to produce photo gift products, we use PPI, or Pixels Per Inch. Pixel stands for Pixel Element and it's the smallest physical element of a computer monitor screen that our eyes can see. We recommend images at 300ppi to produce the best quality products. However, we do not recommend converting a 72ppi web image to 300ppi as the resulting image will be very blurry or pixelated. See the examples below to get a better understanding of various resolutions.

When printed at 8" x 10", the image on the left is good. The right image shows pixelization.
