What is the preferred image quality or resolution for
uploaded images?
|
What looks good on your screen will not
necessarily look good printed.
As a general rule, there are four main factors that determine image quality:
1. The quality of the recording device (camera's sensor,
scanner).
2. The size (in pixels) of the digital image.
3. The format the digital image is stored in (JPG, BMP, TIFF,
PNG, etc.).
4. The "eye" of the /artist
Here are some guidelines to help you select the best possible image file:
Your actual results will vary based on the pixel size of your picture, file
format choice and options, and any zooming performed on the image. The more
pixels your picture has, the higher quality of print that can be produced from
it. The file format you choose to save your picture as determines whether or
not some of your image is 'lost' when saving it.
Your selected template and picture actually get printed on an 1.25" x 2" area on the top of the
Dog Tag.
We reccomend an image of at least a resolution of 200 x 300 for best results.

How big of an image can I upload?
|
We will accept almost any size picture. However, in order to be able to
efficiently produce your order, we will only store enough image data to print a
300 dpi 10.5" x 8" picture - the largest possible image we print on a Photo
Gift.

What does "dpi" mean?
|
When a computer displays a digital image, what it does is take the data in the
file and display thousands of tiny dots on your screen. The more dots an image
has, the more detailed the picture can be. Image quality is measured by dots
per inch, or "dpi".
We will display a low image quality image if your digital picture will be less
than 100 dpi on the Photo Gift.
For best results, we recommend that your digital pictures be at least 200 dpi
when printed on the Photo Gift.
Why? 75 dpi is usually acceptable when an image is viewed on a computer screen.
However, unless you have a very expensive, high-quality monitor, there's a good
chance that your screen doesn't display much more than 75 pixels in an inch.
When you see an image in person, you expect it to be clearer. For the most
part, we expect images to be at least 100 dpi when we see them in person, or we
notice that edges appear a little fuzzy. Professional photography quality is
usually around 300 dpi or higher! Here's an example of two images that look
similar when viewed on a screen, but look very different when seen at printed
image size:
1000x800 |
640x480 |
|
|
When printed as an 8x10, here's what they'll look like (only part
of the image is shown): |
